Recovery from knee surgery varies from person to person. The first six weeks tend to be the hardest, but most patients report a significant improvement in knee function by the twelve-week mark. There are many factors at play during knee surgery recovery, many of which are out of the patient's control. A patient's age and the complexity of the knee injury can make a difference in recovery progress and outcomes. However, whether you have experienced a torn meniscus, ACL, or Patellar Tendon, age and complexity matter less if the patient is disciplined regarding post-operative tips and guidelines. Most patients will experience the highest levels of success and a swift recovery by following these tips.
Tips for Recovery:
- Modify Surroundings - removing hazards, such as loose rugs, cords, and heavy furniture is important to preventing trips and potential falls. Take it slow and use mobility aids, such as a brace, crutches, or wheelchair as needed.
- Elicit Support - caregivers can keep patients honest by acting as reminders for medication and following post-operative guidelines, as well as being on the lookout for causes of concern. Caregivers can assist with mobility and act as a contact point with the healthcare team if needed.
- Manage Pain and Swelling - taking pain medication on a regular schedule makes it easier to keep pain at bay. Ice packs can also be used to reduce swelling. It is often recommended to place on the knee for no more than 20 minutes at a time.
- Stick to a Physical Therapy Schedule - PT is important for strengthening and restoring movement. It is critical to attend all appointments and practice any at-home exercises regularly.
- Keep Moving - Once you are cleared for exercise, working up to regular and increased physical activity is crucial to recovery. Finding the balance between rest and activity is imperative to continued success.
